About the Event

The Data Methods Initiative goes offline and into real life.

Join us at Jönköping International Business School for two days of hands-on exchange, honest stories, and collaborative experiments around computational and data-intensive methods in the social sciences and humanities.

Hosted and sponsored by the Media, Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC), DMI:IRL is not a workshop in the usual sense. It’s a space to share what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what we’re still figuring out. We’ll hear candid reflections from senior scholars, create room for early-career projects to grow, and test out new ways of working together across methods and disciplines.

The program mixes short talks, interactive sessions, peer mentorship, and plenty of fika. Expect to leave with new ideas, connections, and collaborations, plus the reassurance that no one’s methods journey is without its bumps.

Whether you’re method-curious, method-anxious, or a seasoned tinkerer, you’re welcome at DMI:IRL.

Preliminary Program

Day 1: November 27, 2025

Arrive, check in, and grab a coffee before we begin.
Kick-off remarks from the hosts and organizers, followed by a light lunch together in the seminar room.
Two senior researchers share candid stories about their struggles with particular methods, the successes, surprises, and lessons learned. Together we open up a space to talk honestly about the messy side of doing research.
In Sweden, a fika is a chance to pause, enjoy coffee or tea with something sweet, and connect with others
Early-career researchers pitch ideas or projects in progress. The rest of the group takes the role of discussant, offering constructive feedback, resources, and encouragement. A session for mutual support and collective problem-solving.
Continue the day’s conversations in a more relaxed setting over dinner (reservation for 25).

Day 2: November 28, 2025

Contributors to the forthcoming edited volume gather to discuss scope, structure, and how we will collaborate.
Our final fika together as a small group. Coffee, a snack, and informal chats before we open the doors to the broader event.
Open session where two senior scholars give an overview of Computational Methods and how they can be used in different projects.
An interactive speed-dating format where participants pair theoretical and methodological expertise. A playful but purposeful way to discover collaborators and unexpected connections.
Wrap up the event with an informal lunch in the seminar room. Time to exchange contacts, make plans for future collaborations, and say goodbye.

Meet our hosts

Media, Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC)

Based at Jönköping International Business School, MMTC explores how digitalization, sustainability, and globalization shape businesses and industries. Since 2003, the centre has connected researchers, practitioners, and communities to understand market dynamics, innovation, and strategic responses. As host and sponsor of DMI:IRL, MMTC provides a home for open, cross-disciplinary conversations on how data and methods can be used responsibly and creatively.
