Our commitment to accessibility

The Data Methods Initiative (DMI) is committed to ensuring our website is accessible to all users, including individuals with disabilities. We adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA and integrate selected Level AAA features where feasible. Our goal is to create an inclusive digital environment that is user-friendly, functional, and navigable for everyone.

Measures to support accessibility

We take the following measures to ensure accessibility of our website:

  • Include accessibility as part of our organization’s values.
  • Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.
  • Integrate accessibility into our internal and external practices.
  • Include people with disabilities in our design and development team.
  • Include accessibility as a requirement for our web content, which must meet WCAG 2.2 AA, and should meet AAA as feasible.
  • Assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities.
  • Usability test with participants with disabilities.

On our website you should be able to:

  • zoom up to 200% without problems
  • navigate all of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using a modern screen reader and speech recognition software

This website is designed to comply with the technical standard for websites and mobile apps, EN 301 549 v.3.2.1. This closely follows level ‘AA’ of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. DMI’s website meets WCAG 2.2 Level AA and incorporates selected WCAG Level AAA elements, including:

  • No background audio
  • Programmatically indicating the purpose of icons, regions and user interface components and using ARIA landmarks to identify the regions of the page
  • Giving visitors control over the background and foreground colors as far as “Light Mode” or “Dark Mode”
  • Giving visitors control over animations on the site

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of the Data Methods Initiative (DMI)’s website, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.

Known limitations:

  1. Third Party Systems: We work with third party systems such as WordPress, MailerLite, Gravity Forms and Cwicly, and while we make an effort to select software solutions that conform to accessibility standards, add layers of code to improve accessibility and/or communicate with developers to suggest accessibility improvements, the owners and developers of these solutions have the ultimate control over their accessibility and in some cases there are no viable alternatives. I welcome all feedback regarding the platforms I use and suggestions of alternatives to improve the accessibility of our organization’s processes.
