About the Event

Mathilda Åkerlund, a postdoctoral researcher at Umeå University, explored how digital platforms and social media enable far-right political expressions and gender-based hate. Using computational methods for content analysis, she highlighted the challenges of conducting research in this area, particularly the risks researchers face, including doxxing and threats from far-right communities. She also discussed protective measures to safeguard researchers’ privacy and safety. Additionally, she pointed out how ethical review processes often focus primarily on risks to research participants while neglecting the potential dangers such research poses to the well-being of the researchers themselves.
